Eight characters that describe a life
BaZi (八字, literally "eight characters") is a Chinese destiny system that has been practiced for over a thousand years. Instead of twelve sun signs, it uses eight symbols — two characters each for the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Together these are called the Four Pillars (四柱), and each pillar is a pair made of one of the ten Heavenly Stems (天干) and one of the twelve Earthly Branches (地支).
The system's premise is simple and radical at the same time: the moment you were born is a snapshot of the cosmic weather — the balance of five energies called Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water (the Wu Xing, 五行). That snapshot, practitioners believe, shapes your temperament, your patterns in relationships and money, and the rhythm of your opportunities over a lifetime.
How a chart is actually calculated
This is where BaZi surprises people: it is not divination in the mystical-coin-toss sense. The Four Pillars are pure astronomy and arithmetic. The year pillar changes at the solar term of Lichun (立春, Start of Spring, around February 4), the month pillars follow the sun's position through twelve solar terms, the day pillar runs on a fixed 60-day cycle that has repeated without interruption for millennia, and the hour pillar depends on your birth hour — corrected for true solar time at your birthplace.
That last part matters more than most people realize. Two people born on the same date but five hours apart — or in the same minute but in different cities — can have completely different charts. This is why serious BaZi calculators ask for your birth city: the clock time is converted to true solar time based on longitude and the equation of time.
What a reading can and cannot tell you
A well-done BaZi reading describes structure, not fate. It tells you your Day Master — the element at your core — how strong or supported it is, which energies dominate or run scarce, and how these tendencies tend to play out in career, money, relationships and health. Skilled readers also map ten-year Luck Cycles (大运) that describe the changing weather of your life.
What it cannot do is decide your choices. The classical texts themselves say so: 命由天定，运由己造 — the chart is given, the path is walked. Treat a reading as a mirror with unusual precision: it won't tell you what to do, but it can show you patterns you've been living inside without noticing.
