How Does a BaZi Calculator Work? (And Why Most Get It Wrong)

Four hard problems behind a 'simple' form
You type a birth date, city and time; a chart appears. Under the hood, a correct BaZi calculator has just solved four problems. First, solar terms: the year changes at Lichun and the months change at twelve solar terms — moments defined by the sun's apparent longitude, which requires astronomical series accurate to seconds, not a lookup table.
Second, true solar time: the hour pillar must be read against the sun's real position at your birthplace, which means longitude correction plus the equation of time. Third, the 60-day cycle: day pillars follow an unbroken sexagenary count anchored to known dates. Fourth, timezones and daylight saving: historical DST rules change how a wall-clock birth time converts to the sky.
Where most calculators cut corners
Common shortcuts: fixed solar-term dates rounded to the day (a birth on term day can get the wrong month pillar), no true solar time at all (boundary-hour births get the wrong hour pillar), and naive DST handling for overseas births. Each shortcut silently corrupts the chart — and the reading built on it.
A test you can run: cast the same chart in two calculators for a birth near a solar term boundary or in a far-western timezone. If the pillars disagree, one of them is guessing.
