Reading a Chinese Birth Chart: A Step-by-Step Beginner's Guide

Step 1 — Cast it correctly
Garbage in, garbage out. Use your exact birth date, time and city, and make sure the calculator applies true solar time. The output is a four-column table: Year, Month, Day, Hour — each column a heavenly stem over an earthly branch.
Step 2 — Find the Day Master
The day pillar's stem is you. Note its element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water) and polarity. This is the reference point for every other character: all ten gods are defined relative to the Day Master.
Step 3 — Judge strength by season
Look at the month branch: it's the climate your Day Master was born into. Same element as you, or one that generates you? Supported. One that drains or controls you? Pressured. Then scan the other characters and roughly count who helps and who hinders. This is how you decide if the chart reads as strong, weak or balanced.
Step 4 — Map the elements and ten gods
Tally the five elements across stems and hidden stems — dominance shows talent, scarcity shows growth edges. Then identify the ten gods around the chart: Direct Officer suggests structure and leadership, Direct Wealth suggests steady income, Eating God suggests craft and expression, and so on. Where a god sits (year, month, hour) tells you which life area it colors.
Step 5 — Add the weather
Finally the luck cycles: ten-year chapters with their own stems and branches. A chart read without cycles is a land without seasons. Read the land first, then the weather — that's the whole method.
