The chart is the land; the cycles are the weather
A BaZi chart is often compared to land: it describes the terrain of a life — what grows easily, what needs irrigation. Da Yun (大运), the ten-year luck pillars, are the weather that moves across that land. The same terrain produces different harvests in different decades.
Each luck pillar is a pair of characters — a stem and a branch — derived from your month pillar and your gender: Yang-year men and Yin-year women move forward through the cycle; the others move backward. The starting age is calculated from the distance between your birth and the nearest solar term — often landing on oddly precise, oddly meaningful ages like 7.6 or 4.2.
How a cycle is read
Each pillar's stem is read as a Ten God relative to your Day Master — Direct Wealth years reward steady building; Seven Killings years bring pressure that forges; Direct Resource years favor study, credentials and mentors. The branch adds the environment: harmonies open doors, clashes rattle them.
Practitioners look for the decade where the cycle's element supports your Day Master — often the years people describe as 'everything finally moved'. And they pay attention to decades that press on it, which tend to be the ones people survive and then talk about as their making.
Why timing changes strategy
The classical use of Da Yun is tactical, not fatalistic. A wealth-favoring decade argues for building; a resource-favoring decade argues for learning; a clash-heavy decade argues for flexibility and reserves. The map doesn't choose for you — it tells you what the weather will be while you choose.
